I write the post, add any images within it, and can manipulate some metadata for layout, all within the Bear note-taking app. I’m pretty sure I will still suck at regularly posting any longer-form stuff, but we’ll see!ĭall-E's rendition of a bear writing a note, stuck in a web.Īny time I want to write a new blog post, I start a new note in Bear with the tag cmsbear/post (or cmsbear/draft if I want to keep it a draft and only be able to preview it while logged in). For now at least, I’m not really expecting to develop it forward as a proper project, more just putting it out there. I’ve open sourced this custom CMS (AGPL license) and made it available on GitHub. I had the idea to use Bear as a CMS for my personal site,, and started hacking away at it an embarrasingly long time ago in my so-called “free time”, and I have finally launched an updated version of this site that runs on my custom CMS, which serves up content directly from a snapshot of my Bear database. I’ve been a paid user for years, and it’s where I do most of my writing (outside of emails). I love the note-taking app Bear, available on macOS and iOS. ![]()

It increases your heart rate and decreases blood flow away from non-essential organs. This system is in charge of all the things that get your body ready for activity. ![]() The parasympathetic nervous system also controls digestion - from the secretion of gastric juices and moving contents down the digestive tract. Filling up your bladder (thankfully not emptying it) is done without you knowing it, until those stretch muscles send an impulse that gets you on the path to find a restroom nearby. The involuntary rest and digest portion of the nervous system. This kind of response is thanks to the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system which controls things that you don’t have to tell your body to do - thankfully - like breathe, digest, and make your heart beat. You might have felt butterflies in your stomach, or started sweating and turning white - these are the involuntary signs of your nervous system at work. ![]() You’ve probably heard about the stress response: “ fight or flight” especially when it comes to scary things like fighting a bully on the playground, or standing up and giving a big presentation. Once all the details were set Joe then arranged for items to be bid through his list of contractors and craftsmen, We met with numerous contractors, requested and reviewed the bids, revising the design as needed, and sending them out again for revised estimates. The end result was a design that we were satisfied with. ![]() Once an option was selected (with modifications based on feedback) Joe kept us in the loop by sending updates of the design via graphics sent by email and follow up meetings. Once he completed initial sketches of options for the space he met with both myself and my children to discuss the options and listened closely to our feedback. Joe’s style is very collaborative-keeping the client involved. Joe took the time to get to know the site and understand how I wanted to use it. I decided that a ‘Master’ Plan needed to be prepared in order to cover all the options and just as important establish and work with a budget I was comfortable with. I was also concerned with finding the proper contractors to help with the installation of the project once the design was complete. In short I wanted the pool and surrounds to complement the overall aesthetics of my property, not compete with it. The site itself is unique- so I was concerned with whom to work with regarding this, I was especially concerned that the design not intrude on a view I have of a lake bordering my property. We have the expertise to evaluate and resolve grading issues in the underlying foundation, prepare a site master plan that considers access, circulation, safety and any other aesthetic opportunities.I was considering improvements for my residence in Frederick County which included a pool with hot tub and its surrounds featuring an outdoor fireplace. Pool design is a process that illustrates well the value of working with a professional landscape architect. ![]() Once that is finalized, the client will commission the pool contractor for all of the permitting and installation. Typically, our team will work with our client in conceptualizing and documenting the overall site plan. We often get asked what our role entails in the process of designing and building a pool. This modern pool design, has allowed us to leverage the small space and use the wall to embed water fountain spouts, making the pool a beautiful water feature when not being used as a pool. The petite pool design will be located in the private outdoor space off the master bedroom, tucked up against a raised planter wall. Our team is currently designing an 8’ x 16’ plunge pool for the property featured in this blog post. If you’re a regular reader of our Outside, In Blog, you may remember a recent issue centered on How to Design a Small Space. (Disclaimer: Studio 1515 has never worked with, nor is Studio 1515 endorsed by Mod Pools). One such manufacturer includes Mod Pools. Intriguing to say the least! We’re still researching those and will share as we learn more. We are even starting to see some interesting “prefab” pools made of shipping containers. Small backyard pools can measure around 8-10’ around and about 4’ deep. The idea of a petite pool design has gained popularity. Sometimes called ‘plunge pools,’ ‘spools’ (combo spa/pool), ‘splash pools’ or just little pools. Fortunately for homeowners, there are now many options and we’ve summarized some concepts and considerations when it comes to modern pool design. ![]() In actual fact, we can forget need, many buyers in the property market simply don’t have the luxury of large backyards, due to increasing sub-divisions and small lot sizes. ![]() In today’s world you don’t need a big back yard to add this amenity to your wish list. Although this is the case, our Studio 1515 landscape design team have received copious inquiries and interest in adding a pool to many new or existing backyard designs. Large pools are often expensive to construct, fill, heat and maintain. Sigh… the reality is backyard pools can also require a lot of regular maintenance and off season up-keep. However, like a glistening mirage during the dry summer, we’re often quick to think about all of the good in a backyard pool. ![]() ![]() ![]() Note: this is true for other programs which may use headless at the same time as cucumber is running There's also a different approach that creates a new virtual display for every parallel test process - see this implementation by Cucumber with wkhtmltopdf destroy # kill_headless_without_waiting.rb new ( display: 100, reuse: true ) headless. new ( display: 100, reuse: true, destroy_at_exit: false ). start # test_suite_that_could_be_ran_multiple_times.rb new ( display: 100, destroy_at_exit: false ). Among the diverse suite of basalts, the primitive magma at Campi Flegrei is of interest as it shows geochemical and petrological evidences of a mantle source that might still feed the current pre-eruptive system 13, 14 and lead to dramatic eruptions. ![]() We experimentally determined the viscosity of a primitive alkali basalt composition at pressures (P) representative of upper mantle to reveal the effect of its mobility and ascent velocity on the timing of magmatic supply of deep portions of volcanic plumbing systems where, in absence of faults and dikes, the magma moves by porous flow. Although such studies highlighted differences in viscosity up to four orders of magnitude within ~ 1.5–13.0 GPa and temperatures up to ~ 2200 ☌ for melts that have SiO 2 contents between 46.6 and 67.5 wt% 12, at present none of these compositions can be taken as unique reference values to model the rheological behavior of mantle-derived subduction-related basalts. ![]() More recent experimental studies have used in-situ X-ray radiography techniques combined with high-pressure apparatus, which have allowed to explore a wide range of simplified silicate melt compositions like peridotitic 7, basaltic 8, trachy-andesitic 9, albitic 10 and dacitic 11 melts at high pressure and temperature representative of Earth’s mantle regions. These models cannot be used to predict viscosity at mantle depths where primitive magmas originate and, therefore, the effect of pressure is such to influence their atomic structure 6. These viscosity models can be safely used to model the viscosity at atmospheric conditions (e.g., lava emplacement) or for shallow magma bodies or conduits where the effect of pressure can be considered negligible. Additional studies have provided empirical numerical models to determine the viscosity of melt compositions spanning terrestrial volcanic rocks from basic to silicic, from subalkaline to peralkaline, and from metaluminous to peraluminous 5 (and references therein). Several studies have investigated the viscosity of natural 1, 2 and synthetic magmas at various pressure conditions from atmospheric to ~ 400 MPa 3, 4. Understanding the rheological properties of magmas at pressures and temperature at which they form is necessary to model the ascent rate from Earth’s mantle up to the surface. ![]() ![]() This partly explained Röntgen’s confusion about the relationship between light and X-rays. In 1911, von Laue, a physics professor in Münich, determined that lines in diffraction gratings were not spaced closely enough to diffract X-rays. Light passing through a grating is dispersed – which means it is separated into different colors that go in different directions (Figure 12.3). The gratings consist of many parallel slits (or sometimes grooves), typically spaced between 0.0002 and 0.03 mm apart. Physicists routinely measured the wavelengths of colored light using finely spaced diffraction gratings. The diffraction of light was well understood at the time. 12.3 Diffraction gratings containing fine slits disperse light into different colors X-rays became inextricably involved with mineralogy when Max von Laue successfully used crystals as a tool in this search. Various physicists searched for an understanding of the nature of X-radiation. Because the radiation seemed to behave differently from light, he thought it a completely different phenomenon, calling it X-radiation. Röntgen deduced that electrons interacting with the walls of the tube produced a high-energy form of radiation, and he showed that the radiation could penetrate paper and even thin metals. By chance, he observed that a nearby piece of barium platinocyanide fluoresced when he turned on the tube. He was studying the relationship between matter and force as charged particles flowed from a heated filament in an evacuated glass tube. Röntgen taught and studied physics at the University of Würzburg in Germany. All this knowledge would have been unobtainable if Röntgen and his coworkers had not recognized the importance of some curious phenomena they observed while studying cathode ray tubes (early versions of television tubes) in 1895. We draw pictures, make enlarged models, and study the details of crystal structures of thousands of minerals. Today we accept without question the idea that atoms bond together in regular arrangements to make crystals. In less than two decades, scientists developed a firm theoretical basis for understanding how atoms are arranged in minerals. Mineralogists quickly discarded many hypotheses disproved by X-ray studies just as quickly, they developed and tested new ones. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s discovery of X-rays in 1895 allowed mineralogists to proceed with their studies and eventually led to a greater understanding of crystal structures. Without a way to test hypotheses, development of an understanding of atomic arrangement and of bonding in crystals was stalled. Some ideas about crystal structure were generally accepted, while others were poorly understood and hotly debated. They hypothesized about atomic arrangements and the nature of crystal structures, but they lacked direct evidence. By the late nineteenth century, mineralogists knew that crystals had ordered and repetitive crystal structures. Scientists studied minerals for hundreds of years before the discovery of X-rays. Other important analytical techniques include X-ray fluorescence, atomic absorption, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, ion microprobe, Mössbauer spectroscopy, visible and infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy.ġ2.1 X-ray Diffraction 12.1.1 The Discovery of X-rays and Diffraction. ![]()
